Negotiation Mastery – Get Creative in Business and Day-to-Day Life
Sometimes in negotiation we have to figure a way to get creative. In business when two opposing sides or people are discussing a deal and not able to work out the final terms, getting creative may mean the difference between win win or win lose. For instance you may be hiring someone else to perform a service for you as a consultant to get you more work. They may want the entire amount up front and there is no guarantee they will get the work. You might get creative and propose a way that you pay them a percentage up front and some more on the back end when the work starts to come in and you start earning some income. This is exactly what I did with a firm I hired to do some booking for me for speaking. They got a part of the payment up front and then the rest would come from the gigs they booked for me.
Getting creative simply means to look outside the normal way of doing things and come up with a different or creative way to make something work where you both win but the terms make it more favorable for you while still providing a win for them.
Getting creative in your day-to-day life means looking at a solution for something outside the norm. For instance I downsized from a 3 BR townhouse with a garage to a 2 BR condo with no garage. I let go of a lot of different things. Furniture, clothing, appliances, etc. I had a dresser and an armoire and let go of both of them with no plans to replace them because of the smaller size of my bedroom. I sat in the empty bedroom for while contemplating what I could do to accommodate my clothing and somehow have it separate from the rest of the room. I thought about a partition of some kind and putting a chest of drawers against the wall by the closet but I didn’t think that would be enough to hold everything. I had a walk in closet at the previous house along with the dresser and armoire. Then an idea came to me. I decided to create a “walk in” closet. I remembered seeing something like that at Ikea. I looked online to get an idea of what was available and then went into the store and sat down to create it with their software. I figured I needed 3 wardrobes, shelves, drawers etc to make it work. See video for the visual story.
I got creative in business and in my day-to-day life. It’s something I often do to figure out a way to make something work that ordinarily would not have it I didn’t take the time to use what I sometimes call “no box” thinking. People often say “think outside the box.” That implies that there is a box we normally think in. By applying no box thinking, you automatically get creative and think differently than the majority of people. Apply no box thinking and get creative in your business and you life and.you will always get what you want from the family room to the boardroom. GoPINK!
